Niugini Bass, also called Papuan Black Snapper, are the prime target sportfish species in Papua New Guinea. Inhabiting brackish and fresh waters, their maximum size is around 50 pounds. But even fish in the 30-pound class usually prove too tough to handle. It’s the toughest fish for its size in freshwater, akin to the giant trevally of the ocean. They strip gears on big-game reels, pop guides on tuna rods, snap muskie plugs in two and torque powerful men to their knees. Papua New Guinea also has exceptional saltwater fishing to offer anglers with such species as giant trevally, yellow fin, marlin, sailfish, dogtooth tuna, wahoo and other pelagic species.
